Welcome to The Char Hope Farm Market, a place where growing our own food takes on a whole new significance. Beginning in 2015, Char Hope became the first agricultural and recovery based program. The idea was to integrate agriculture into women’s recovery from substance abuse.
For some background, I am the Farm Based Educator at The Char Hope Foundation. I was born and raised on a small, local farm. Growing up, the farm had taught me numerous life lessons, work skills and soft skills. If I did not have the opportunity to grow up on a farm, I truly believe I would not be the person I am today. I am truly grateful to be able to share my experiences while helping others grow.
The Char Hope Foundation focuses heavily on the genuine impact agricultural can have in someone’s life.
How does it work?
Addiction recovery digs deeper than just not using drugs or alcohol. The concept of animal therapy allows the residents to heal from within. If they are having a bad day, they are able to go hug a horse, cow, lamb and be in the moment. The comfort and compassion an animal portray goes way beyond the surface of a “just” a hug. Just a hug becomes hope, faith, and love. Animals are the best listeners, and because they are not able to speak, they are more in tune with how a human is feeling internally. Sometimes, they even point out what we need to work on before we even know. That is amazing in itself.
Besides animal therapy, how does the farm help these women?
Agriculture is a business; it teaches life skills and work skills needed to reenter the work world. Our farmers market will provide the residents with the opportunity to build up their resume and abilities. The farmers market teaches the residents financial skills, organizational skills, customer service and helps to rebuild their work ethic. The residents take pride in raising our products from start to finish. A lot of hard work goes into every product.
Agriculture is planting, growing, and nourishing. Our community garden provides the insight to self-sustainability and develops a new appreciation of the food on our plate. Every hand covered in soil represents hard work, every foot in the stream feeling the smooth rocks and the flow of the ice-cold water represents healing, and with every muddy foot we become one with the beautiful things earth provides. The women begin to heal within, and to witness this healing is, to say the least, incredible.
When you purchase our products, you are not only purchasing farm fresh food, but you are also helping individuals find themselves again. You are assisting in their healing, growth, and helping them to prosper. Every purchase nourishes the soul and mission of The Char Hope Foundation. For that, we will be forever grateful.
